Insecurities: We've All Been There
Welcome back to H.E.R. Story! This month, we're talking about building confidence. Growing up, I was always the insecure little girl. Loving myself and walking with my head held high was always a struggle for me. I so badly wanted to be the girl that could walk in rooms and feel good. Instead, I was the little girl that constantly told herself that she wasn't enough. I never felt like I belonged in spaces with other people that I looked up to, and I convinced myself that being confident was something that was out of my reach. I'll never forget getting my hair done in the salon and being too ashamed to even look myself in the mirror. My stylist at the time told me to not be afraid to look at myself and say something nice about how I looked. That moment taught me that I should never be ashamed to embrace myself and feel good about the person that I saw in the mirror.
I'd be dishonest to say that my struggles with my confidence didn't continue on throughout my childhood and even my adulthood. However, life has taught me that I was the only person in the way of my own growth. Working on my confidence has taken a lot of unlearning bad behavior. It truly starts with the inner work first. You have to identify what things that you're telling yourself and put an end to the negative self talk.
I will always emphasize the need to do the inner work first because that's what will bring about the biggest changes in your life. Confidence isn't built overnight, but if you make it your mission to make small strides you'll get there. Today, I want to share with you a few beauty tips that have helped me build my confidence daily.
Personal Style: Experiment to Find Your Look
Looking good on the outside will always help you feel better internally. By putting effort into how you look, you start to tell your brain that you're worth the effort. There have been countless instances when I didn't brush my hair or just threw on comfort clothes because I didn't feel like I was worth taking the time to look nice. Doing that led to a pattern of me not feeling my best, which created a domino effect in other areas of my life.
You deserve to feel good every day, and a great way to do that is to develop your own personal style. Finding your style can be a fun way to experiment with what you like and don't like. I suggest that you start by looking into your closet and taking note of what you love and what you're willing to get rid of. Purge those items that no longer fit you, and start playing around with the items that you decide to keep. Mix and match items in your closet, play around with accessories, and more importantly have fun.
Create a Regimen: Build a routine around YOU
Creating a routine for yourself will help you be able to consistently show up for you. At the most basic level, I recommend developing a skincare regimen. Regardless of whether you're a makeup lover or not, taking care of your skin will help give you a boost. You don't need the most fancy products to get started. All you need is a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen. By using those three products, you can start glowing from the inside out.
Aside from a good skincare regimen, I suggest that you find little things that you can add into your day that you love. I personally have been implementing three makeup items into my routine. Lately, I've been loving mascara, a little bit of cream blush, and my PNP gloss (of course). Those small additions have been making me feel so good when I leave my house. Find what you love, whether that's a favorite accessory or your go to lip combo.
For the final month of the year, I'm challenging you to work on building your confidence. Try some of the tips that I mentioned and watch how your mood will transform.
See you in January,
Angel
