Habits. They're the things that we've picked up over time that we continue to do regularly. Unfortunately, all of the habits that we acquire aren't necessarily good ones. The bad habits may be what keeps us from making the growth steps that we need to make us better. Most of us are well aware of what our bad habits are, yet many of us struggle with breaking them.
Today, I want to offer a solution to you called micro habits. Instead of creating these elaborate goals that we give up on in a few days, I want you to think smaller. Micro habits are the smaller actionable steps that eventually will help you achieve those bigger goals. Starting small may seem like a setback, but I want to challenge you to change your perspective. By starting small, you are more likely to stick with your desired goal and actually form a habit out of it. Just think about the amount of times that you started, stopped, and repeated the cycle of on again and off again.
You can break the cycle and change the behavior by implementing micro habits. Let's get into how you can start. First and foremost, you need a clear goal. Don't just say something like "I want to exercise more." Be very clear and specific about not only what you want to do, but how you plan to do it. For example, "I want to exercise three times a week for 15 minutes on the treadmill." is a way better goal.
Now that you have a goal in mind, it's time to start working on it regularly. When you start working towards these goals, set the right environment for success. For example, if you want to be more productive during the day don't do your work from the bed. Set the right tone for your goals and see how far you're able to get.
In spite of trying to do our best, sometimes we simply fall off. If you find yourself, slipping away from the goals you set, immediately sit with yourself and identify the problem. Once you do that, find a solution and keep working at your micro habit until you get to where you want to be. Don't allow yourself to repeat the pattern.
Bad habits can be difficult to break, and good habits can feel even harder to develop. However, it is definitely possible. By creating smaller goals, you will be able to seek the benefits of of working your way up to where you want to be. I guarantee that you will feel so much better and more accomplished by taking it step by step and day by day. Remember that we're all in this together. For the month of November, I want you to start working on those things that you gave up on. It's never too late to start.
